On the great steppes of Szamberek wander the great nomadic clans, filled with people of every race and creed, raiding deep into the north of Ilimbera, hunting for riches and taking all those they come across captive. Once back on the steppe, the captives are given a choice – face a series of trial to prove themselves and be welcomed into the clan, or live a life of servitude. Many of those taken captive are slaves already, and having won their freedom, relish the chance to inflict suffering on the empire that bound them. Because of this, all peoples are represented among the clans, although humans and orcs are more numerous than any others.
The clans live on horseback, and many of the more adventurous depart in search of greater riches. Though few ever return, those who do are welcomed as great heroes.
The clans are animist, worshipping the sky in the aspect of a great father, and newcomers are expected to take up this religion. Some few are blessed by the storm at birth, becoming clerics of the tempest, or for the most powerful, stormborn sorcerers.
